Indeed. I don't know if anyone here has read much by Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon, etc)... at a book signing, he made the following (paraphrased) comment about his Baroque Trilogy:
"Most of the really crazy, weird stuff in the books is what actually happened. When you read the mundane, boring, uninteresting things... that's probably what I've made up."
